The National Institutes of Health has launched a new initiative to harness the power of commercial cloud computing. The STRIDES (Science and Technology Research Infrastructure for Discovery, Experimentation, and Sustainability) Initiative has partnered with Carahsoft to bring on Google Cloud as its first commercial cloud industry partner.
This agreement will build a cost efficient framework for biomedical researchers at NIH as well as the more than 2,500 research institutions across the country that receive NIH support. This partnership will involve collaboration with NIH’s Data Commons Pilot to lift economic and technological barriers to storing, accessing, and computing on large biomedical data sets in the cloud.
