Flume Technology Overview Whitepaper

The new Flume data communication protocol takes a unique approach to addressing the effects of latency in long-distance data transmission. Where normal protocols such as TCP try to minimize latency, Flume takes advantage of latency to improve overall throughput. The result is that while TCP throughout suffers when latencies increase, error or loss rates grow, Flume's throughput continues at or near the throughput limit of the channel. Real world use shows Flume to out perform TCP-based solutions by five to 100 times in these situations. Furthermore, the addition of available channel bandwidth results in corresponding increases in Flume throughput.
