In March 2024, at the ATARC roundtable with Fortinet Federal, federal experts discussed the complexity of cybersecurity in the digital era and highlighted a number of challenges as well as strategies to deal with them. The following were their points:

- An Acceptable Risks: Sometimes agencies must accept calculated risks while seeking a balance between strong security and mission enablement.
- The Need for Collaboration: For agencies to adapt to new technologies and threats, alliances with private firms are very important.
- Basics First: Foundational security measures should be put in place before moving onto more sophisticated ones.

During this conversation, foundational cybersecurity practices came up prominently, with calls for private sector partnerships and Zero Trust implementation among federal agencies so as to boost cyber resilience.
