Open Source and a DevOps Approach to Development

Today’s Innovation in Government Report highlights the government’s modernization challenges. Rob Efrus, the president of the Coalition for Enterprise Open Source Software for Government, explains why using Open Source matches up well with the government’s move to a DevOps approach to development.

The attributes of open source include agile open standards which enable interoperability, cost savings and the like. As agencies frequently adopt an agile development model, they're building a little and testing a little rather than going into very, very large programs where there's vendor lock-in, and agencies are committed to a systems integrator over a long period of time where requirements change. The innovation comes from the flexibility and the agility of open source software.
