A Crowdsourcing Approach to Security

Today’s Innovation in Government Report highlights the government’s IT modernization challenges. Paul Smith, the General Manager and Senior Vice President, North America Public Sector for Red Hat, says taking a crowdsourcing type of approach should alleviate any concerns about the security of open source software.

More eyeballs, the better on the code. And then working with the government agencies, we already talked about the development of security enhanced version that was worked in concert with one of the intelligence agencies, but we also work very closely with NIS, and their SCAP protocol for actually automating the process of security controls. We've worked with 18F on their open control which is a way to actually have configuration lock down of how systems should look, and these are all open source projects. And it's just a way of making things happen faster and better.
