FIPS 201 is one such regulation, implemented in response to a presidential directive (HSPD-12) in order to improve the security of government resources and facilities. This standard and its related Special Publications define hardware, systems and processes for the secure issuance and maintenance of high-assurance, trusted credentials to federal employees and suppliers.
