It is a truism in cybersecurity that the threat landscape is always evolving as attackers look for new and more effective ways to infiltrate Government networks. This year, the landscape is further complicated by the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, geopolitical instability and the Trump administration’s reductions to budgets and staffing levels at many agencies.
Responding to an ever-changing threat landscape certainly requires speed and flexibility, and yet, some recommended measures are downright pedestrian. Despite the allure of exciting new technologies such as AI, experts emphasize the need to stay focused on the fundamentals, which include patching and updating software, instituting multifactor authentication and following other cyber hygiene practices.
The holy grail is a strategy that seamlessly protects data, endpoints and the network as a whole while employing advanced measures to identify threats and mitigate the damage they can do.
Data protection is a key element of such a strategy because accessing Government information is a central goal of most attackers. Given the complexity of modern systems and the speed with which attackers change tactics, breaches will continue to happen. When they do, limiting the damage requires stopping the attack as quickly as possible.
Choosing the right tools and strategies has always been a balancing act for Government security teams, but the ability to identify and respond to threats is even more crucial as the cybersecurity landscape shifts in new and unexpected ways.
