Thanks to open source software, concerned citizens are now able to track bills, contact representatives, and get involved with others in their community with the click of a button. Open source practices are not only making citizens’ lives easier, but improving the functionality of state and local government systems throughout the country.
The city of Raleigh, NC has been at the forefront of open source innovation since 2012 by making their policies, project management, and source code all open. Their open data portal shares city data pertaining to demographics, public safety, urban planning, and more. Currently there are 135 datasets, 189 maps, and 270 charts shared with the public on the portal, and the numbers keep growing.
