Open Source Helps Meet Digital First Goals

SDDCAt the federal, state, and local levels, agencies are challenged to think “digital first.” This means when developing outreach campaigns and strategies, the first consideration should be how to reach people online. In a recent study on smartphone use, 40% of survey respondents said they use their phone to look up government services and information. And, as most citizens have access to the Internet, governments are now empowered by a massive, transcending platform that reaches many citizens with consistent messaging. In order to help reach constituents, Open Source technologies are enabling government agencies at all levels to get online quickly with the latest functionality and design citizens expect.

Carahsoft’s partner, Acquia, is an Open Source leader in helping governments build digital experiences for the 21st century. Their solutions are based on a cloud platform for building, delivering, and optimizing digital experiences. Each year, the company looks to honor organizations using Acquia and Drupal in innovative ways. This year, Carahsoft’s customer, The State of New York, was honored as the Public Sector, State and Local winner for their clean and concise state portal. The site lets users easily access state government news and services, including real-time public transit updates, employment resources, healthcare information, and more. With the redesign and launch, New York State has nearly tripled their audience to more than 6 million users and annual page views have quadrupled since launch to a record high of over 17 million. New York residents are interacting with their state government in ways they never have before due to accessible, understandable, and useful information.

We’re excited to see how state and local agencies are embracing Open Source as an answer to the challenges of serving diverse and distributed populations.
