A National Treasure Come to Life with Autodesk

autodesk federal teamThe Autodesk Federal Team is dedicated to the historic preservation of some of the most iconic sites in the United States. Beginning in December 2014 through May 2015, Autodesk engineers working with the US Navy in National Park Service in Boston, MA completed a 360 degree scan of the outside of the USS Constitution. To start, we shared the success of Autodesk ReCap’s previous achievements and quickly developed a plan to 3D model the ship using LiDAR and still photos. As the Navy Shipbuilding Major Account Representative with the Autodesk Federal Team, I have had the honor and privilege of leading a small team of Autodesk engineers in a volunteer effort to scan the USS Constitution using our ReCap reality capture technology.

For the first time in 30 years, our team was able to create new interactive images of this undefeated ship. Using LiDAR, we scanned the outside hull and superstructure of the boat. We collaborated with the Commanding Officer of the USS Constitution, Sean Kearns, to better understand his mission objective of refitting the ship in order to make the 3D model most useful, as well as the NAVSEA Supervisor of Shipbuilding and the USS Constitution Museum curator, Laura O’Neill.

It was a privilege to have the opportunity for Autodesk engineers work with the Navy to scan the USS Constitution. This infographic explore the process in which we used our technology to create a 3D model of the ship to be used by the Navy for the Constitution’s refit. By clicking through the infographic, you can learn more about the history of the ship, and the technology used to complete the scan. It was an amazing experience to be able to work with the Navy and scan a ship as historical as the USS Constitution. Check out our infographic to be a part of the experience!
