With government becoming more active users of open source technologies, containers are the next big trend popping up in federal IT shops. The container moniker is used because the technology approach is similar to what the shipping industry has done. Today, containers full of diverse goods are stacked upon one another and shipped on a single platform, be that a ship or a train. That same principle is now being applied to open source applications.

At this year’s Red Hat Summit, Red Hat announced the general availability of OpenShift Enterprise 3. OpenShift Enterprise is a Platform as a Service (PaaS) that helps application development and IT operations teams create and deploy apps with speed and consistency. This is one of the most groundbreaking releases of the year, making OpenShift the first enterprise ready web-scale container application platform. OpenShift is based on Docker and Kubernetes to deploy, run, manage, and orchestrate container based applications.
