Federal Innovators Leveraged VMware Virtualization to Stand Out in Data Center Optimization Awards

VMware customers receive one win, one honorable mention

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 20, 2012 — VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, is proud to announce that two of their Federal customers were honored June 19 at the Data Center Brainstorm luncheon at the 2012 MeriTalk Optimize Data Center Awards in Washington, D.C.

Brigadier General Kevin J. Nally, Director for Command, Control, Communications, and Computers (C4), United States Marine Corps, was named the winner of the Excellence in Data Center Consolidation Leadership Award. Anil Karmel, M&O Chief Technology Officer for National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), received an honorable mention in the Innovative Application of Technology to Support Data Center Consolidation category.

Brigadier General Nally has spent the past 14 months leading the virtualization of the Marine Corps networks and championing the consolidation of the Corps’ data centers in a regional approach focused solely on supporting Marines deployed around the globe. In July 2011, he achieved a huge milestone, declaring the Marine Corps’ Federated Data Center, located in Kansas City, Initially Operational Capable (IOC). Called the Marine Corps Enterprise IT Services (MCEITS), this center hosts the Corps’ programs and the Enterprise Service Desk (for NIPR and SIPR) in a federated, distributed and deployable environment.

Anil Karmel at NNSA is utilizing cloud-based social networking tools to allow the NNSA’s workforce to collaborate and work from any device, at any time. ONEvoice is an immersive collaboration and social network that includes Web and desktop video conferencing, instant messaging, voice and e-mail from one unified client, powered by YOURCloud, a secure, hybrid community cloud.

“Congratulations to both Brigadier General Nally and Anil Karmel for being recognized in these prestigious awards,” said Aileen Black, Vice President, Federal, VMware. “Brigadier General Nally’s vision for managing IT as a strategic asset is resulting in immediate and long-term benefits for the Marines. His efforts support the warfighter with a flexible, secure and scalable network, enabling access to information and knowledge-based data rapidly anywhere, anyplace, at any time. Anil Karmel’s vision allows NNSA’s workforce to collaborate and work from wherever they choose, when they choose.”

MeriTalk’s Optimize Data Center Awards recognize excellence in government data center consolidation programs and leaders. Winners were chosen by an independent panel of judges, composed of professionals from government and affiliate organizations with experience managing, implementing, funding and maintaining data center consolidation programs for public sector organizations.
